Non-mathematical Stuff
Home
During the summer and fall of 2004 and the early winter of 2005, my brother and I built the house where I now live in Missoula. The only things we didn't do were the excavation, carpet and gutters. It was brutal. If you'd like to learn about it and see some pictures, check out this journal entry.
Land
We are lucky enough to own some land on the Dearborne River, between the Missouri River and Highway 200, near Wolf Creek, Montana. For some pictures see here.
Travel
Starting August 1, 2006, my family and I lived in Helsinki, Finland for one year. During that time, I wrote an electronic weekly journal. They can all be found here. The entries deal primarily with our day-to-day life in Helsinki, but they also address our various travel excursions within Europe. Each entry includes a number of pictures. I also wrote articles for the UM Math Department newsletter (download Spring 2007 issue here) and the UM Office of International Programs newsletter "Expanding Horizons" (download September 2007 here).
Adventure
My family and I love to ski. Our hill of choice is Discovery near Anaconda, Montana, where we've had season passes for the last couple of years. But my wife and I also enjoy nordic skiing. Here's a skiing blurb for the 2007-08 season PDF.

Trips with Dave Sumner: our trips include a winter ski trip in the Oregon Cascades in the winter of 1999, the Sawtooth Wilderness in Idaho in the summers of 2001 and 2005 (pictures); the Dark Canyon of the Colorado River in southern Utah in the summer of 2002; and the Eagle Cap Wilderness in Oregon in the summer of 2006 and 2008 (PDF Journal).
In March of 2007, I participated in the Rajalta Rajelle-hiihto, which is translated from Finnish as "from border to border cross country ski". The route was over 400 kilometers, or 250 miles, from the Russian to the Swedish border across Finland, and we skied it over 7 days. It was a truely great trip. For more detail on my experience see PDF.
In the summer of 2005, I ran the Bridger Ridge Run, which I highly recommend if you're in to that kind of thing.
